About G.729.1

ITU-T G.729.1 recommendation is a scalable wideband speech and audio codec standard specifically designed to meet the market need for a smooth transition from today’s predominantly narrowband (300-3400 Hz) VoIP systems to wideband VoIP, which provides more than twice the encoded bandwidth (50-7000 Hz) and correspondingly improved sound quality – delivering greater intelligibility and comfort to users. The main benefits are the interoperability, the scalability, the robustness to frame errors, the flexibility and the low-delay version available.

G.729.1 was specifically designed to be backward compatible with the widely adopted G.729 narrowband speech codec. G.729, standardized in 1995, delivers toll-quality speech at the low bit rate of 8 kbps, with moderate transmission delays and processing requirements. As a result, G.729 has been widely deployed in applications like VoIP, web collaboration tools, and visual telephony, where quality, delay, and bandwidth are important.
